Not so very long ago, I fancied myself a city girl.
Born in Dallas and lived all over, but for the most part, a city girl since adolescence.
We moved to the country a year and a half ago, with me kicking and screaming the whole way. But something wholly unexpected has happened interiorly since then, something I never saw coming.
I have fallen in love with the country.
In my dreams, I walk the lonesome hallways
of abandoned, old white farmhouses.
What is it about them that speaks to me so?
My heart aches when I hear of yet another stately old homestead being demolished.
And for what?
To make room for something grander, perhaps?
In whose eyes?
What could be grander than this.....
or this...
or this....
In my mind's eye, I see most clearly.
That with
time. and patience. and love.
This
becomes this....
Not perfect.
But perfectly beautiful.
To me.
A place to live. To love. To grow.
To raise a family.
One day, we will have that old white farmhouse, and it will become as much a part of us as our very souls.
This I know.

I am with you... those homes should be saved and loved....jules
Hi Anne,
I adore old homes and they just have so much more character than anything new.
I even went as far as buying a book, that I had borrowed from the Library of Martha Stewart's
The New Old Home, just in case we found that old place to do up.
I say ... save the old homes, instead of pulling them down!
Hugs
Carolyn
i am right with you as far as the old old homes go. i dream as i drive past them, they speak to me. keep enjoying all of you as these homes have something to say.Bestest,Denise
i totally agree. for me, the only thing grander is a big white abandoned barn. it is my dream to one day turn one into a home.
Hi Anne, love, love, love this post. I grew up in an old white farmhouse, that had been built in 1842. Unfortunately, it was too close to town and an insurance company bought it and it had to go because of all the building codes and "restrictions" that they could not comply with. It broke our hearts. Hope you get yours soon. They take a lot of work!
Debra
i love old chippy farm houses too, its as if there calling you home.
Aaah...great post! Thank you for appreciating their beauty, I am a full-on househugger.

Gorgeous pictures, warms the heart! Have a blessed day!
Those old farmhouses are dreamy! We lived in a 1912 brick rowhouse for 3 threes when we first got married. Loved the charm and the character. Thanks for sharing! Great post!

Lovely post ... I live in an old white chippy paint house {1914} ... not a farmhouse, but close ... nothing beats old, it gives such a feeling of stability.
I also hate to see the old places going ... they tore down a gorgeous old theatre here in town ... only to be replaced by a rite aid drug store that lasted one year ... no it's an empty ugly building.

they are all beautiful...........oh.....if those walls could talk!
Oh Anne, what a wonderful post!! And such gorgeous farmhouses...don't worry, you will find yours one day and I pray it's everything you dreamed it would be! hugs and love, Dawn
Ah....bliss. Love old farmhouses, even more than tattered cottages. And that's sayin' something!
This is my fav post because I too love old homes. I took pics this past weekend of several that I'll be doing a post on soon. Too bad they are torn down, they have such character. Love the pics of these old homes!
Oh, I love those homes! That would crush me to see them torn down as well. So much history and love in those homes. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful post.
The stories those old homes could tell! They are certainly treasures from a past era. I only wish that more could be saved... Beautiful post!
Kate
Thank you for making me realize how blessed I am.
I live in one of those old white houses and sometimes gripe about the lack of certain amenities like more closets.
But what I do have is character.....
YES! save the farmlands!! I wasn't rasied on a farm - we transplanted within the fields ourselves.......and we did do just that; fix it up - (it is tan though .....not white :)
I'm having a giveaway.......btw.....
Wonderful pictures Anne! We live in a 113 year old Victorian home that we are renovating and I am so in love with old homes.

i love this post! such lovely houses and yet so sad. i get teary eyed whenever i see an abandoned old farmhouse. i would love to have the money and time to fix them all up! the first house in the post reminds me of my great grandmother's house. thanks for sharing- i'm glad i'm not the only one who has a heart for lonely old houses!
What a sweetie you are! Again, I too was dragged "kicking and screaming" (to quote one of my favorite writers)to rural Washington, although through a series of mishaps, we ended up in a historic house in town, and not on the 4+ acres I was 'promised'. Your dream will come true, and you will save one of these old homes you love so much. Isn't it fantastic that we're united with this incredible group who sees so much of what we see, and feels so much what we feel? Love that.
i have dreamed forever of living in a white farmhouse...your images are beautiful and speak loudly to me...
The pictures brought back some memories for me. My Dad, who passed away this year, used to love to take us 6 kids on country rides (we lived in Maine) and he would stop whenever we came by an abandoned farmhouse. We would run through the houses claiming rooms for ourselves and making up stories about our lives in the house.A barn to run through was always a bonus.
I am a city girl, but can appreciate the beauty of those homes and places...there is simple attractive on simpler days and simpler living!
Amazing places! My mamma's house in Sicily is an old convent from the early 1800's, not touchable at all. the same for every building there. I came in the USA and first thing I saw on pacific coast hwy was old beach houses been taking down to make room for hotels! It's so sad. Happy White Wednesday to you. Ciao Rita mammabellarte
so much old, melancholy beauty...oh, how i love these photos and this post! it brought a tear to my eye...
mary
Anne we are definitely kindred in our love for these forgotten beauties. Everytime I see one I want so badly to make it mine. I can see myself on the stairway...in the kitchen...on the porch, I just love them! I wish my husband could see it!lol
Hugs,
June
Wonderful, wonderful photos!
i'm so with you. i realize some homes are too "worn out" from use or too "sick" to be salvaged, but i can't help but think there are always people who would give anything to save the farm homes...our history.
Great Post Anne
Lots of beauty here to see thank for sharing with all of us gals!!!!
Have a great day
Kate
Oh I totally agree. I so love old farm houses & know that I was meant to live in one.
Those homes are so beautiful & there is so much potential. They just speak volumes & remind us of our heritage. It also breaks my heart to know these old homes get torn down. :{
Love your blog....

I am with you. These wonderful old homes hav such history.I think it's a crime to destroy our history for someone elses ego. Sharon
I would love to own one of those chippy white house's! Every time we go to Iowa my heart aches to see these wonderful treasures falling to the ground! I would love to save everyone of them.
Theothertheresa

Anne~ What a great post. Those are some great old houses. I remember when we hadn't built our house yet and I would drive by an old neglected home I would literaly want to cry and think if I lived there it would be fixed up and looking so nice. You'll get yours someday. Don't give up hoping.
Take care,
Kathleen

I walked around the houses, peeked in the windows, imagined families that lived there long ago and went on their way for whatever reasons - so many stories we'll never know. Thank you - very interesting. Jennifer
