Where THIS Woman Creates...

I'm not overly big on snapping and sharing all sorts of shots inside my home.
We have a very nice, roomy, comfortable dwelling,
but there are  aspects about it I'm dying to change....swap out the carpeted areas for wood floors, finally get moving on some window treatments, etc.
I also cop to feeling a bit intimidated by the absolutely mad decorating skills
of some of you ladies and gents! No need to name names, you know who you are...

There's a really wonderful publication called Where Women Create,
and it's filled with image after image of the workspaces of inspiring, creative ladies.
I'm always fascinated to see where my blog friends whip up their magic,
be it a studio, office, or like me, a desk in the living room
and a workstation in the computer room.

Today I'm going to give you a glimpse of my tiny little creative space
just off the front door in the living room.

Not loving the green carpet, but oh how I love this desk!
Found at a garage sale about a month and a half ago for....get this...$7.50.
I recall a tale from  Stan Williams, The Elegant Thrifter himself,
of a much beloved desk he rescued in the early 80s for $10, which you can read about here
That's exactly how I feel about my utilitarian beauty,
and I'm not even going to brag that I beat Stan by a whole $2.50! ;-)
This is really an amazing piece of furniture,
heavy and sturdy and save for some wear on the desktop, in absolutely stellar shape.

The gorgeous chair was purchased from my bestest guy-pal junkin' buddy
Troy of Junk Exchange, and I can't imagine
another chair fitting quite so perfectly, can you?

My antique mail sorter, and I know for a fact that it is
fo shizzle a true antique, this baby is OLD!
I use it to store craft glue, paper clips, stamp pads, glitter, and the odd tchotchke.

That's a bird's eye view of just one of the areas I like to spread my creative wings.
Hope you've enjoyed the tour!

  3. We do have wood floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, but the dreaded green carpet is in all the other main living areas.

Hey, laminate works for me, too! ;-)

  5. Oh Anne! It's BEAUTIFUL! I love the look of it, and adore all those cubbies. I have been on the lookout for a mail sorter of my very own for years with zero luck. The whole setting is so sweet, just makes me smile at it! And the Scrabble tiles? So precious!

Having just spent the last two weeks laying hardwood, you make me appreciate them. (right now I am in the move the furniture back mode so I am not really feelin' it yet...) A friend and I did it, it's not hard to do if you have the tools!!!

  8. Hi Anne:
Had a desk nearly like this; only difference was a rail that ran from half way along each side around to the back (front?). It was meant to keep things from falling off the desktop. There were decorative panels on the outside that made it possible to face into a room or against a wall, at I pleased. The drawer side on mine was exactly like yours. When we moved to Florida, we gave it to one of our kids. They now have that desk, as well as my DH's (HUGE)old oak rolltop desk. Loved - and still love - them both but there's only so much room here and something had to give.
    Thanks for sharing!

  10. Wonderful place to spread your creative wings! I love that desk and chair and what a deal...congrats on that!
I wish I had a place to create that was all my own...a place that I could leave the mess, and not have to clean it up to cook supper... but I'm sad to say, I have no room for a studio, at this time (so I can only dream!). I do my creating and crafting at the counter or at the kitchen table, just in case you were wondering. I'll ever be dreaming of a studio though! Boy will I ever go to town crafting then! Your posts are always so fun...thanks for sharing!

  22. Wow, what a deal on that desk! I like the cubby holes of the antique mail sorta. Your desk space is a lot neater than mine. I try to keep it neat, but then scraps of paper, pens, etc. seem to drift back to either side of my computer. ~ Sarah

  24. Anne, you got that desk for a steal! I'm really am lovin' that mail sorter. I have tried to find one for years now. You'd think Idaho still had the pony express, cause you just don't see many of them here. Probably because they are still being used today!lol

  28. Hey girl....the space is wonderful, so don't go tellin' me that you don't "create".....hmmmm, sounds like a cop out to my challenge??? Tried to comment on your earlier post about the space not working out and was having computer problems....wrote a whole wonderful meaningful disertation of how things work out for the best and all, but will simply tell you the best philosophy is.....go in the direction you are led...if it is difficult it isn't meant to happen yet, and when it meant to happen.......it will be easy and successful....something better will come along that be better, and if you had moved to the first floor right now, it would have prevented you from doing the better thing....make sense????? You are where you are supposed to be....just keep workin' it the way you are, girl, and it will all be yours! xojana

  31. It looks like a very inviting space. I also like the cubby to store all your favs in. Great space. I think I have a couple old suitcases just like one setting alongside. I use to store crafting things in. Now they are in storage waiting to be repurposed again. I have something in mind just have to get around to it.

Thank you for your sweet words. I miss keeping up with y'all. But, I am so far behind on personal business that I just can't justify sitting at the computer in the midst of chaos.

  37. Love that space. Just perfect. When the kiddos get a bit older, I want to turn the playroom into a "study" room. Your space is exactly what I have invisioned for the room.

I also think the need to change things up never ends. Our house is 4 years old and I designed EVERY aspect. I already have several things that I want to change. Too bad our money tree died. Boo-hoo.
