Just listen to THIS...
From the recently televised Hope for Haiti Telethon.
To my mind, NOTHING beats the late Jeff Buckley's version, which I've posted below, but JT's sure does come close.
This is far and away my favorite song ever, mostly for the hauntingly sublime lyrics.
Well I heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music do you Well it goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Well your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you And she tied you to her kitchen chair And she broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips you drew the hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Well baby I've been here before I've seen this room and I've walked this floor You know I used to live alone before I knew you And I've seen your flag on the marble arch And love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Well there was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me do you But remember when I moved in you And the Holy Dove was moving too And every breath we drew was hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Maybe there is a God above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah
( Leonard Cohen)

Oh Anne!!!
ReplyDeleteI know I've heard that song before but I never really paid attention to the words. You are so correct - they are sublime and so beautifully written. Thank-you for sharing it with us on this special day.
Blessings,
Jo

i also like k.d. langs version ... but love this song and it was one that was played at my brothers funeral ..
ReplyDeleteand Yes, it gives me goose bumps - as if they are strumming your heart strings - that touching .. love it and thank you for sharing it ..
ReplyDeleteLove the song but let me tell I have never seen a more inspiring union of such star power. Everybody sung with so much heart. No credits, no aplausses, just there to help. The hole thing was very moving. Did you see a report about a cuban restaurant owner that for days have been feeding the people? They asked him why he have not left like everybody else and why doing what he is been doing. He said he was there because he is a human being. Simple enough, profound enough. He wants to help rebuilt Haiti. That is the spirit.
ReplyDeleteIn the lighter side, did you see Madonnas face? She could not move her face or open her mouth wide. I said plastic, for sure. Take care and visit sometime. Blessings, Marta.
I have never heard this. We weren't home to watch. This is really an amazing piece of music. Thank you Anne, for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, dear
Debra
This song and the number by Kid Rock, Cheryl Crow and Keith Urban just blew me away. I can't wait to add all three to my playlist (hopefully!).

I loved it, o.k. being a mom of small kids the first time I heard it was on Shrek (a little embarrassed to say that but it's true!) The whole event was spectacular, it was full of hope and humility.
ReplyDeleteO.k. love that you put clothespins in a jar- the truest form of flattery! Thanks, Theresa
I saw that show and it was beautiful! Hope you are feeling better:)
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter how many times I hear this song, it ALWAYS gives me goose bumps! Love it!
ReplyDeleteGoose bumps, yes, I say Amen and again, Amen. Have a great week, Anne!
ReplyDeleteI have Jeff Buckley's version in my CD player right now!
ReplyDeleteMichelle
Great version of this song, Anne! I agree with you that nothing beats Jeff Buckley's version, but Justin Timberlake did a fantastic job with this. Thanks for posting! :)

ReplyDeleteJust getting ready to call it a night on a wonderful Sunday evening....Had a great day of crafting and creativity. I listened to this song (also one of my favorites) and all I can say is--what a perfectly peaceful way to end the evening.
What a special song to share with us..thank you!
Cori
Hi Anne!
ReplyDeleteLoved watching the videos -- hard to decide which I like better. The second one (original) probably, but the one with Justin Timberlake (who knew?) has all the current-events feeling behind it, so it is really touching, too.
Great post, girly!!
XOXO

This song has long been one of my very favorites, but nothing beats the Leonard Cohen version! Excuse me, but I have to go put on a Leonard Cohen CD now.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!

Hi Anne. Wasn't that show wonderful. I had goose bumps too. It was so beautiful. I don't think I've ever appreciated Justin Timberlake's voice as much as I did during this song. His and Matt's voices were both truly magnificent. When I get my computer (not Neils) back up I will definiately have to listen to Jeff Buckley's rendition. I don't know his music at all.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. Hugs...Tracy :)
yes I watched it and it was beautifully moving.
