Buster Welcomes You to White Wednesday

Welcome to White Wednesday, hosted by Kathleen at  Faded Charm.
And please say hello to "Buster", too.

Buster has been on lay-away at the posh antique shop downtown for a couple of weeks, and was anxious to get settled in his new home. He made the trek back with me to Casa de Twig just this afternoon.

I had admired him for several months, and each time I'd pop in the shop, would be relieved to find him happily perched in his regular spot...until one day a few weeks ago, when I was dismayed to find that my darling little boy was nowhere to be found! There was a new lady working the desk, and she had no idea where he was, nor had she even seen him prior. Saddened, I left and vowed to be a better follower of my own advice in the future....

This little pearl of wisdom that I designed is displayed on my side-bar. So why the hey didn't I listen to myself???  I'm tellin' ya, there's no regret quite as bittersweet as the one you feel when you pass up that one special something that just speaks to you. You try to rationalize that you don't need it, that the price is bound to come down, that it'll still be there next week.
T'ain't always so. Sometimes, you miss the boat altogether.
But other times.....

You get a second chance!

Turns out Buster had been relocated by the owner, and after inquiring as to who purchased him, I was happily made aware that he was still available and was simply hiding, as capricious young lads are wont to do.

He had actually belonged to the owner himself. He had purchased him in England many years prior, and had carried him in his lap all the way back home to the US on the plane! I asked what he had named him, and was shocked to hear that he didn't have a name.
And that was when I knew.

Buster had never really, truly belonged to the kindly owner of the antique shop.
True, he had discovered his young charge and had transported him safely overseas those many years ago.
But to have never named him? How could that be?
I am a firm proponent of anthropomorphizing those "objects" which speak to your heart...of giving a name to that which calls out to your senses and provides you with delight, with enchantment, with wonder.

That was when I knew that Buster had always been intended for me.

He has a proper name, but he has yet to reveal that to me.
He has shared that Buster is his nickname, and that's how he prefers to be addressed until he gets a bit more settled. I told him to take as long as he likes, and to make himself comfortable. He has a forever home now, no more living on a shop shelf or in an overcrowded mall booth. Buster is here to stay.

He looks happy to be home, doesn't he?

  2. Oh Anne sweetie...
I love Buster. I am afraid I would have had to purchase him too. How could so many people walk by and not have wanted him to come home with them? Oh my gosh. I think Buster suits him fine for his nickname, but I think he is a very dignified Thadius. That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw him. Call me crazy, I know. I don't even know where it came from?

I am so thrilled you rescued him. I know he so wanted to be adopted.

Have a beautiful day sweetie. Country hugs, Sherry

  4. Oh Buster, If I wasn't already married! You would be my honeypie:) He is too cute, ANNE! Love it and happy to see that you didn't give up on something you wanted really bad! Enjoy your evening!

  5. I thought you had named him Buster because he looks like Buster Brown. His picture used to be on all of my shoes when I was a little girl. Why Buster wore black patent leather, I can't explain. But anyway, his head looks the same, just lacking a little color!

  6. You are a kook! I like him. I think he looks like a James or William personally... let me know what he ends up telling you. But, if he REALLY starts talking, don't tell me. ever. This chica doesn't mess with haunted stuff!!

  8. Personally Anne, I think he looks a little like you, especially in your thumbnail icon. Just a twist of the head and a winsome smile. You do have a tad more coloring, which is good.
He's a real sweetie, that Buster! Glad you didn't lose him!

  9. Oh Girl...I just about did this during Christmas and nearly had to pay the ultimate price for DRAGGING MY FEET!

My hubby saved me! He of course tells a slightly different tale in my comment section...still...I nearly lost out on something I LOVED because I was being STUPID!

    Sweet Post. Love Buster!

  10. Just a tad more coloring, eh? ;-)

Well Michelle, I can't name him James, 'cause that's Mr. Twig's name.

I was thinking Graham or something like that. But it's not on me to name him, he has to tell me what his name is, remember?

And yes, I am a kook.
You say that like it's a BAD thing. :-P

    XO,
    Anne

  14. Hi Anne:
My father-in-law's nickname was "Buster" - later shortened to "Bus" for his whole life. You post really spoke to me today. Thank you for inspiring some nice memories.

  15. Oh, (tears in the eyes) Buster was my first dog! I could see him beyond the window screen waiting for me every day as I came home from school. Ah, sniff. Buster looks real happy. I think the same thing about all my "antique mall relatives" (framed photos of someone's family) that ended up in the antique mall and now sit proudly on my shelves. My family!

  23. Hey Anne. If I didn't love Buster at first sight your story telling would have made me fall in love. What a fun post. I love the way your waiting for his name to be reviled to you, but I'm just crazy about his nickname. Very good advice by the way!

I know you'll treasure him forever. Lots of good wishes...Tracy :)

I named the dress form I have in my studio. My husband thinks it's strange but I figured a girl has to have a name!

  39. I love the photos - especially the alley way - I like Buster too - but he creeps me out a little (a have a doll thing- I think its the eyes) Anyway - I think that photos are all you need to get the point out there.

  40. Didn't have a name?!? Incredulous! You are right...he never really belonged to her.

Like you and Jane (above), I have to name everything, too. I have a dressform that I have unofficially named Jane. I haven't been able to spend that much time with her in this last year since I got her, so it may change once I get to know her better. She doesn't have a face, though, so that makes it a little harder. lol!

As for Buster...I've been looking at him a while...what do you think about 'Elliott'?
