Building a New Nest

Around the Twig household,
another day off work = another day of running stuff over to the new homestead.

Mind you, we're limited to whatever we can carry in my Ford Escape,
but bit by bit and piece by piece,
it's starting to feel more like home.

Here's what we carried over today...

My sweet chippy corner cabinet
{oh, how happy I am that I didn't take it to the booth to sell!}
along with a few more more doo dads to spruce the place up.

A few days ago, my husband brought a few other pieces over...

The guest bedroom.
These aren't in their final resting places, by any means.
An armoire is a must in an older home, as everybody knows closet space can be a bit scarce.

I plan to paint some of my furniture,
but room after room of white on white
actually bores me to tears.
It works in the kitchen and dining room,
but I think people will be surprised
to see how much non-white stuff I actually own.

And the wicker screen?
Will likely be used to hide my idiot cat's mammoth litterbox.
Seriously, she requires a HUGE Rubbermaid container as a litterbox,
as she pees just like a cow, standing straight up.
She doesn't even squat. Stupid cat.

Speaking of bathrooms...

You see this fabulous shelf I had been using in my booth?

Well, I needed something in my new bathroom to hold my toiletries, so voila!

This'll do just fine, methinks.

That's about it for now.
And again, be sure to check back in the days and weeks ahead,
we're making furniture runs all the time these days!

Have a wonderful evening and week ahead!

:-)

  12. Anne,

Love watching you move in piece by piece. The picket fence corner shelf I have will compliment the one you are using in your bath room. Email me a shipping address so I can send it to you as a house warming gift. My two siamese cats have their own bathroom. We finally invested in the best invention ever made -- a self cleaning liter box! I never see it, touch it, and best of all smell it!

  18. This is so fun; it is like watching a "before" and "after" unfold, and much better than HGTV! The pieces you have taken over to the House of Twig are perfect and I think you will have a lot of fun setting it all up! The school teacher and Nana in me loves the alphabet rug and so would Maya & Eli - like any toddler worth their salt, they sing the song all of the time!

The cat sounds very entertaining! :)

This is fun watching you set up your beautiful home.

  21. Even though it's not my house, it's so exciting to see things moved in and put in place. It all looks like it was made for that house so far. I had to chuckle about your cat's toileting habits. We had one that when she got older would get into her litter box, wiggle a bit to get in just the right place, squat and then pee on the side or even just outside the box. Yep, she missed the entire box.

  42. I'm so excited for you, I know it's stressful moving...but it's also so much fun. A chance to reinvent your home. To take something that was of no consequence in your old house, put it in a new space & suddenly it becomes a focal point. & isn't having a booth or shop to pull from awesome. I always love that when I'm moving things around in my house. It looks lovely & 1 of my favs is...that cute little floor rug! Love it!!!
I know how busy you are, but I sure hope I get a chance to see you in TEXAS...if not this time, maybe next!

  47. I am so anxious to see what you do with this house. It is like a blank canvas waiting to be painted. We have those mats in our store. Right now we have a bunch of Halloween ones. Since I always have a cat too many, what I do with the dreadful cat box is cut a hole in a closet door (mine is in a hallway closet) and put the cat box in there. Works really well until my huge dumb cat trips and knocks the whole box over!

    Take care, Sue

  57. Anne, I have been following your new endeavor(house) for a while now, and following your blog for a long while...I comment from time to time, but I want you to know I envy part of your life!! the vintage/antique-y part LOL :)

The new cottage is adorable, needs a little TLC but for the most part it is adorable! I hope it doesn't need more work than you think it does (as we found out the hard way, with our older home) it is truly the money pit, and 24 years later it still is not finished and now Hubby is older and I am disabled, the kids are grown and out for the most part, so we do not have helpers really either. The original house was built around 1910, then it burnt down and was rebuilt on the same foundation in 1938 by the 2 brothers...nothing is on center, there was no insulation, the walls were this fiber board crap. They used tongue and groove oak flooring for the BASE floor, (what a waste) the electric was minimal and old glass fuses with only 60 amps of power coming into the house, the meter was inside the enclosed porch, so if no one was home, the meter didn't get read. There is no central heat except a wood stove. (originally it was 2 crappier wood stoves and an OLD kerosene burner. There is an addition my late MIL put on, that has electric baseboard heat. the addition has issues also cause the builder was a wack job! nuff said there. LOL

Anyway, my wish and prayers for you is that you find no hidden surprises along the way.
I viewed your wedding pictures today for the first time...love all of them! love the one on the blog especially, and the one sitting on the rock wall.

I have have some nosey kind of questions if do not mind... please respond by either answering them, or telling me it is none of my business but I am curious.

our "old homestead" is on 4.77 acres in the woods. the front almost 2 acres is cleared but still has many trees most are HUGE some evergreens 50-100' and Maples at least 50', then up behind the barn/garage(falling apart) it is all woods. It cost us 89K in 1986 here in very expensive NJ(can go on the market now for almost 400K especially if we finish everything). so I am curious of the sq. footage of your new home and the buying price.

now this one I hesitate to ask, but It is not meant in any way to be offensive. You guys are a great looking couple, but I get the feeling hubster is older than you. I ask, because my hubster is 19 years older than me. (this is a 2nd marriage for both of us) he has a son, I have a daughter and then we have a son and a daughter together. (now 24 and 23) On Nov. 9th we'll be celebrating our SILVER anniversary.
so you see why I ask. Do you have any children?

Lastly...you are an RT, I am an MRI technologist by profession though now sadly disabled (on the job injury, on top of my knees being shot) ANYWAY...I know what it is like to work F/T in the hospital...my wonder comes in the form of "how do you find the time to also run an antique shop?" and KUDOS to you for being able to do so. In this line, do you ever come across thimbles? especially ones with designs on them, or places? If so would you be willing to give me first dibs and email me? I collect them.

I LOVE that the cottage has bead board, and transom windows....so unique and chic!! I'll be continuing to follow your wonderful story!
    Susan

PS...I agree with the person who said the "fence shelf is perfect for your bathroom"

  100. Welcome to the COUNTRY! What a BEAUTIFUL little farm cottage you just bought. CONGRATS!!! We're just above you in Kansas and experienced this very thing a year ago last June. We moved from the city to a beautiful Victorian in a small farming town to a 5 acre farm in the country. We worked 3 months on the inside of the house and that wasn't touching the bathroom kitchen and laundry/back porch/entry. We still have those to do yet! It's been an adventure and it still is an adventure but we're LOVING it. Have fun decorating your beautiful old home...you've got some GREAT BONES to work with and so much character! Maura :)
