New House Pretties and Help Wanted

It's been awhile since I had some new
house pretties to share,
so I just have to ask...

see anything new?

anything???

That's right!
I picked up these two Jackson Metal Tub Chairs
from World Market this past week, and it was love at first sight.

I love the sleek lines, the industrial feel,
the comfort, but most of all, I love that they are wood floor friendly.

So what do ya think?
Like 'em?

I think they're a great addition, and seeing as how the world's longest relocation
is due to come to an end in just under two short weeks ( YES! ),
we will soon be sitting 'round this charming little table each and every night.
( and this sweet little dining room will take on a whole new look! )

Before I sign off, I have a quick favor to ask
of all of you wise and wonderful friends...

The hubs and myself are complete newbies when it comes to the care of feeding
of charming old wood floors, and could really  use all of your
best tips, hints and product recommendations to keep them lovely,
or to restore them to their former glory.

Please share!

Thanks so much in advance, and
have a happy week!

Love those new chairs, Anne! From first glance, before you mentioned World Market.. I thought for sure they were vintage indust - they really look it! Glad to hear your moving in is drawing to a close - enjoy! I am a huge fan of Murphy's Oil soap in warm water, rinse & then buff with a flour sack towel for care.

Hugs,

Are the chairs comfy? Every 6 months, Johnson's Paste Wax and cotton cloths...rub on and buff off by hand and lots of elbow grease. The smell is wonderful and the floors glorious when finished.

Your space looks great good luck with the floors.
I used to treat mine horribly with a water washing every week, oops, i was just in my late teens when my first apt had real wood. I didn't know any better :(

Murphy's Oil Soap a cap full with a gallon of warm water is what I use on every floor I have, wood, tile, and the awful kitchen floor. It is safe and I love the way it smells and it conditions my hands.

Great advice on caring for your wooden floors. I will add - do not get overly upset with scratches. They can be wax/buffed and just make the floor more interesting.

When it comes to the wood floors my parents always tended to use beeswax as far as I know - just some locally produced stuff which I'm sure you could get hold of from your own local beekeepers :-)

Oh girl you know I love them! Industrial mixed with french bistro.......NICE!!!! Great combo, great juxtaposition! You have a fabulous eye!!

Our first house was built in 1912 and had the original pine floors. I used Murphy's oil soap with warm water....worked like a charm. Now I use a steamer on all my floors so I don't have to use any chemicals. I miss the Murphy's scent so much!!

Congrats on your big relo coming to an end! I'm sure it is a huge relief!

I've only used Murphy's oil soap and/or a swiffer cloth on my wood floors. I was so amazed that your industrial chairs came from World Market, I thought they were vintage! They are so perfect paired with that cool french bistro chair too. I'm just now getting caught up on all my blog reading Anne and I'm going to enjoy all the posts that I've missed from you! xo ~Lili

Those chairs are divine!!! Just perfect in your room. I know you will be so glad to be all settled in one spot all the time! I have no idea about real wood floors like that. I have the generic "real" hardwood floors. I use Bona. The flooring people told me to never use the steam cleaners or water, but those floors may be very different since they are old and really real!!! I love your floors. I went into a house in downtown Charleston with the old hardwood floors and swooned. They are so lovely! I will ask my friend how she cares for those!

Cute chairs!!!

Everybody in the world has different ideas about wood floors........i'd find someone really old who has lived in the same house for 100 years and ask them!! I went with laminate floor when I saw how bad mine were under the carpet.

Hi Anne,
Love the chairs. They are the perfect addition to your sweet farmhouse table and chairs.

I keep my wood floors dusted using a regular soft broom and dust mop. I mop them with a product called Bonne wood cleaner.

Oh Anne,
Your dining room looks so beautiful!! I love the chairs with your vintage pieces, it's the perfect marriage. We used to buy this really great wood floor spray and use a special dry wood mop to shine them up when they needed it. Other times, just a dry mop to lift up dirt and dust bunnies works well.
I can't wait to see the house when you move in completely!
Have a beautiful week.
Sincerely,
Melinda

Hello there! Those chairs look great with all your whites. I love them and have seen them at WM a few times. At our old house, I used Murphy's too as other readers have suggested. I have newer wood floors now and have found a lighter wood floor cleaner that is a Target brand. Great for everyday cleaning. Murphy's is a workout sometimes.

Hi Anne, Love your new chairs. Your dining room just looks so lovely and quaint! I, like others, use Murphy's Oil soap on the hardwood floors. You can put it on a damp terry towel and wrap it around a push broom or swiffer head for cleaning.
Enjoy your new lovely home~

How you care for wood floors depends on their finish. We have the original pine floors in our 1840s house, refinished with a natural polyurethane varnish (because the previous owners abused them like you wouldn't believe and we had to) and I swear by vinegar and water to keep them clean. Murphy's Oil soap on polyurethane makes the floor cloudy and streaky. It's good on a wax finish, tho. Orange Glo makes floors gummy ... I'd avoid it. The best thing you can do is to keep your floors vacuumed so dirt doesn't abrade them. We have a 'no shoes' rule at our house.

I DO love your chairs, and I share the amazement of those who commented before me .... you got those at World Market???? They look great!

Hi Anne,
I noticed the chairs right off the bat too! I LOVE them! They are awesome, girl!
As for your floors? When I had wood floors, I uses Murpy's Oil Soap too. But I've heard that the steamer is wonderful for your wood floors because they are dried right away. Before, I had to mop on my hands and knees and then dry it right away because I always worried about water on my wood floor. Yeah, I would get a steamer.
Thanks for sharing your chairs!
Hugs,
Sonya

Is it ok to lust after someone else's chairs?! Yes...ok, phew that's good to know because I'm lusting big time for your new chairs!

I love the way your floors look. My parents had "real" wood floors, the old fashioned kind, and they used bowling alley wax on them every few years, buffed to a nice sheen...just beware they are VERY slippery for a few weeks!

Anne, the chairs look great! They must be comfortable for your hubby.

We oiled our old, dry floors with tung oil and a mixture of something else. If you are interested let me know. I will look it up for you. We did them 3 years ago and I love it. If they get a scratch on them I just wipe a little oil and it disappears.

The Green Pea said...

Anne, it is called Waterlox tung oil wood sealer.
Let me know if you need to find it. It is very hard, CA does not sell it. We ordered it, I can look at my records if you are interested. Hugs, sandi

Ah sweet Anne.....wood floors I know about...since my whole house is Walnut flooring. There are lots of good cleaners out there made for floors...but one thing I would advise is that you put pads on the feet of all your furniture. You can buy little felt circle pads in lots of sizes at Home Depot or Lowes. It really prevents scratching and maring of the wood.

Also....if scratches should occur...I have always just used a black felt tip pin to cover the scratches and it works like a charm.

Just my two cents worth here....hope it helps.

Hi Anne! I must agree with all of these gals about caring for your wood floors. I've had them for about 15 years and wouldn't have anything else in my house! :) I use vinegar and water sometimes to keep them clean, and other times my favorite Murphy's Oil Soap Wood Floor Cleaner. That scent is the ultimate "clean house" smell! :) I,too, use a wood floor marker to cover scratches and have felt pads on all chair feet. I'm sooo excited for you that you'll be in your sweet home soon! Happy Dancing for you!!!!!! :)

Lovely chairs! Love the metal against the warmth of the hard woods! In the past, I have used scratch coat and steel wool to cover any scratches then pledge it....but now I have pre-finished hardwoods...that I hope never to have again! Ugh!

Hi Anne,

I jumped over to your blog from Miss Mustard Seeds blog. I dated a hardwood floor guy and helped him from time to time. He never ever recommended wax especially if you ever plan on refinishing your wood floors. The wax gums up the sanding discs something fierce. Sand, wood fill, stain, sand again, vac really well. Then as one reader above mentioned you use natural polyurethane varnish. This old boyfriend would put three coats on top. Anything that gets spilled on the floor gets cleaned up immediately. The recommended cleaning is a bit tedious.. but if you want to keep your floors looking their best... it's worth it. You use two towels one is wet with some warm water and white or apple vinegar and the other is dry to kind of do the Karate Kid version of wax on wax off. Best of luck with the floors.

Kind regards,

Bridget

Ohhhh love those chairs. I've been wanting metal chairs too, but I have to think up a spot for them first ;)

As for your wood floor question, I use a smidge of Murphy's Oil Soap and a little bit of vinegar in my bucket of water. The people who installed our wood floors told us not to use Murphy's Oil Soap (I can't remember why) so rebel that I am, I still use it but just don't use very much :)

Love the metal chairs!!! I'm so happy to hear your relocation is coming to an end, and I'll bet you are too.

As for wood floors, mine are new, but we use felt pads on all furniture, spot clean spills, use Swiffer floor cloths to dust, and only wet mop once or twice a year (Christmas usually). Also, I try not to get all hyped up about scratches, but let the floor age with the family.

Have a wonderful week!!

Wish I could assist with your floors but I'm stuck with ugly brown carpet at my house (well, at least for now). Good luck!

Anne, I love ... those chairs. They look perfect.

I used Murphy's Oil Soap for years, and I thought I was happy. Then I hired a lady to clean for me, and she uses white vinegar and water. Wow! My floors never looks so good. The difference was unbelievable.

OK, hubs says (and he has done this twice on previously owned homes) sand them down, and then refinish them, his suggestion is just clear polyurethane.
Good luck, it is a big job, we did it with the old knotty pine walls in our LR.

I use a swiffer cloth after I sweep and it helps tremendously. I only have to get down on my hands and knees a few times a year this way:-) I just use a cloth with water and Dawn liquid diswashing soap. This is what the guy who sealed our floors recommended.

Happy cleaning!
