Well, Good Afternoon!
It's been about a week since I've posted,
and what a great week it's been.
I wish I could say I'd been doing something prolific
or life-changing, but nope....just been taking it easy,
putting family first, and enjoying life.
I went and saw the utterly, completely life-changing
Broadway musical Les Miserables in San Antonio
yesterday....for something like the 13th time.
To know me, you've gotta know that you really, truly can't
call yourself my friend or kindred spirit unless the story of Jean Valjean
doesn't move you to the core of your very being...
faith, struggle, redemption, love...
"to love another person is to see the face of God".
But I digress.
Today's post is actually about something completely different.
I'll be getting to the point in a somewhat circuitous way
{ regular readers of this blog are used to this maddening predilection of mine }
but first I want to share what my e-mail Inbox looks like
on any given week.
I regularly get e-mails from generally good-intentioned individuals
which usually start with the lines
" You don't know me, but...".
And the next line varies, but sometimes it goes like this...
"I would love to write a guest post for you. I'll write on any topic
you pick, all you have to do is put a link to my blog inside the post".
Other times, I get asked to add someone to my blog roll,
in exchange for them adding me.
And then there are the folks who promise me all manner of goodies
if I will simply but write a product review or endorsement post.
I also get e-mails asking if I offer advertising space,
or if I would be willing to place an ad on someone elses blog.
It's all business as usual when I flick through my Inbox,
and it's given me cause to reflect on why I blog the way I do.
Firstly, I have never placed ads for Fiona and Twig,
and I never will.
I am not selling anything, except photos to editorial publications,
so I see no reason to advertise my blog elsewhere.
Secondly, I have never and will never charge ad space
on my blog, because blogging is not my business.
I have nothing against those who have ads on their blogs,
it just doesn't work for me, and I'll explain why...
I have nothing against those who have ads on their blogs,
it just doesn't work for me, and I'll explain why...
When you accept paid ads, you have a certain responsibility
to your paying sponsors to provide regular content,
and since I have a full-time life AND job outside of
my Fiona and Twig alter-ego, I refuse to place that burden
of responsibility on myself to churn out regular content.
To those who accept and place ads, if it works for you, mazel!
Thirdly, a spot on my blog roll is not up for grabs to the highest bidder.
I believe that I can count every single person over there on my sidebar
as a friend, and the invitation extended to others to write guest posts,
or to endorse certain products is reserved
for known and trusted friends as well.
for known and trusted friends as well.
In a way, it's sort of about claiming ownership of this blog,
and not allowing it to own me.
This post may end up being a bit of a feather-ruffler, but so be it.
No offense whatsoever is intended,
but I feel a call of sorts to produce the deed
to this particular piece of internet real estate,
but I feel a call of sorts to produce the deed
to this particular piece of internet real estate,
and make it understood that as much as I love this blog
and my readers, it is at best, priority number five or six in my life.
But it's mine.
And that's just how I roll.

From one Fiona to another - perfectly put !!!
good for u . i never understood that anyway.
I just went to get my dinner and suddenly thought .... your name isn't actually Fiona, so now I look like a ...
But Anne, it was still perfectly put lol
I don't have this problem, but I can see where it would get a little annoying. It's your blog...go ahead and ruffle away!
XO,
Jane
Ah sweetie, that's what you get when you become so darn popular! I don't have that problem, but if I did, I would feel the same as you on all accounts. I blog for the pleasure of it, and would not want to muddy it up with paid ads etc.
So no ruffled feathers here. I say its your blog you can do what 'ya want to!
Lovely photos by the way! Have a wonderful week!
Well said! I've been receiving a lot of advertisement emails lately with same content. Now, how about that ocean front property that's for sale on your side bar, haha, just kidding. Maybe see you at the Red Barn this weekend?
You don't know me but.... just kidding -- I love your blog just the way it is! You know your goals and priorities and that's perfect!
Lois
Well stated.
Have a great week!

The "public" are always interesting in their expectations. I can't even begin to tell you some of the stories of experiences I've had over almost 20 years in retail! One time I had a dealer in my store that was really mad because I never mentioned him on my blog, or showed his pictures. I point blank told him, it is MY blog, not the store's nor does it belong to anyone else! I believe in my heart that blogging, and being able to write from the heart is a gift we give ourselves! Again, the perfect, well written post!!
Take care, Sue
Great post Anne -and I´m so glad you´re having a good week.
xo Tina
ps: I´ve seen Les Miserables several times too - LOVE it :o)
Well said. I read your blog because you are you.
Happy New Year to you both.
All I can say is aI agree with youon the content etc. Go for it!
Les Miz is the best ever musical...I think we've seen it 15 times in 3 countries. I LOVE it! The message is so true! It truly is a spiritual experience...every time!
Ruth
Amen...sister!
Les Mes was one of the few Broadway shows I've seen on Broadway... have seen it a couple times since but there was something magical the first time
Blessings Anne

Ha! Rebecca said the same things I was going to say!
Amen...sister!
I struggle with the ad things, because in a way my blog does feed my business, but I am just so unsettled about it. I guess that is why I haven't done it yet. I just don't feel right about it, maybe I will in the future, but as of today I just don't know.
And can I just say I am *tickled* to be on your highly sought-after blog roll!! Lol!
You are so awesome!
Mary
AMEN girl!!!!
Happy New Year!
Well done, Anne ... like only you could do it .. well only like you could "say" it.
I hope you always speak without the worry of other's feathers ... this is what I enjoy about my visits here ; )
xo
Jill
I agree 1 million percent with everything you said.
Oh Anne, nobody asks to advertise on my blog:) BUT... I realize that many do have lots of ads! I believe that it slows down the blog a bunch BUT... must work for them! I adore you for you and saying what you mean without beating around the bush! HUGS and many blessings! Keeping your blog just like it is... is just fine with little ole me!
Ditto to what Jill said! I have always thought our blogs were a personal thing, even if they are to help promote our businesses. I am no where near as popular as you so I will consider this post my personal advice column... thanks for that!!
t.xoxoxoox
my favorite are the ones saying
"This is my first time stopping by, love the blog will you sponsor me?"
When they have been following my old blog for years and leave this message every other week...makes ya feel real special, lol
Amy
"You don't know me, but... Your photography is so nice to look it! I love visiting here" Have a great week. ;)
I totally agree with you! But I am fine with the people that do have ads and stuff too.
I agree with you on all counts.
Your blog is very popular.
I think perhaps the fact that you have a huge number of followers that might be why some people might be trying to catch your followers/ readers' attentions with those requests...thanks for not selling us to the highest bidder!
You go girl!!!
hugs
sissie
Love that you are you! Stay true dear friend.
Oh Thank You~ Thank You~ Thank You! I have been asked to "grow my blog"...my kids don't understand WHY I don't blog for ads and income. That is NOT what I am about. You have said beautifully what I FEEL! Love you, kiddo~ xo Diana
Saw Les Miserables at the Kennedy Center in DC this past October. Cried till my eye make-up ran and enjoyed every second of it! Would go again in a heart beat.
Great post, Anne! For me my blog is an extension of my business...and so much more. But I have always felt that our blogs belong to us...and we can do whatever we want to with them...
Hi Anne, I agree with you entirely. It is your blog which I enjoy reading very much and have since day one. I love the pictures that you post and dream that maybe someday mine will be that good. Only dreaming, camera's and I don't seem to get along to well. I am known for having a finger in a picture or two. Take care and Hugs from Your Missouri Friend.
wow...that is so weird, I feel blogs are just to enjoy, just sit back look at pretty pictures, and read some stuff, its weird that everybody wants something from you, very stressfull, I think your approach is the best, its just for fun....not another stressfull business,,,,good for you!!!
Great post Anne~ sometimes a few feathers need to be ruffled, isn't that the way that Birdies Stay Warm! Have a Blessed week~
Cheryl
You talk about a blessing!!!! Girl you just blessed me beyond measure! So appreciative of your honesty and your realness! So glad to know there are others that truly just LOVE people....Thanks for this post and be blessed.
I hear you loud and clear! I have wrestled with it like Mary and may do it one day, but not now (ads, that is.) The main reason? Um... I don't likey the clutter! ha!
Funny though what people will ask for... I guess they have to try :)
oh, totally jealous of your new locker door ;)
love it! stickin' to your guns...that's my kind of girl!!
OH Anne you rock as always
Love ya girly NEVER Change

Hi Anne ~ I think this is totally up to the individual blogger. I don't personally have ads and I get those e mails as well, but I don't have room for them in my life at this point. It is YOUR blog ~ you do what is a reflection of you ;-)
that's what makes you and your blog so darn popular..you're BOTH so "real!"
Love the photos! I am glad to hear you blog for fun ;) I really just enjoy it and feel a bit odd at times when I visit business blogs. I don't mean my friends who make crafts and feature them just all the ads and, well you know when someone really wants to share a great find or when they are "selling". Stick to your beliefs. Blogging is for you, for fun!
Hugs, Lisa
My first visit and I say dont change a thing! You have created an amazing space here. Thanks you ever so much for sharing. I will follow on my way out and hope you can find the time to come visit me and do the same. I look forward to engaging throughout twenty twelve with you. Cheers SpecialK XoXo
Good for you! In the end, we all just have to do what feels right and not be pressured into making our blogs something other than we intended them to be.
Bravo!! Well said.
xxx Liz
Anne, this is such a great post! I also get those emails, but thankfully not as many as you do. I think this is the down side of having a popular blog like yours.
It's funny, I also don't begrudge anyone that has sponsors, heck I have them myself. But I have to laugh when people ask me about mine and how much money I make from them. I've never been paid for my sponsor buttons. They are all friends and have given me giveaway items in the past, even Jellybean Rugs. So I have them up there to help promote them, as all of them are family owned or very small businesses. And my blog roll is sacred to me, and not open to just anyone either. They are my friends and those I want to keep up with every single day!
Glad you had a good week, and I hope this one is equally as relaxing!
Kat :)
Ok, as if I didn't say enough in my last comment, I totally forgot to tell you that my game name is Les Mis!!!
xo
I have to say I found this post to be very amusing. If I get one person telling me that they are my new follower so I should follow them, I can only imagine how many you get. However I know you read them all because you have left me several nice messages. As I continue to blog each year, I mentally assess if I am doing it for the right reason and I come up with the same answer. If I stop having fun then I will stop blogging. Time is only wasted if what you are using it for is not enjoyed, well sometimes.
Les Miserables. So wonderful.
great post...funny, i just recently added you to my blog roll, and it never even occurred to me to ask for reciprocation. i added you so i could share you with my friends....totally selfish reason !
Brilliant!!!!!!
This is one of the things I love about you... YOU'RE SO REAL.
I'm still soooo NEW to this whole blogging world and I'm just beginning to understand only a fraction of it... and that's just fine with me.
You're the BEST!!!
XOXOXO
Oh girl I couldn't have said it better myself. I get all the same emails. I've never advertised because as tempting as that is it's my blog and I don't want to "work" for someone else. Love your moxie:)
One thing I can count on when I read your blog is that I will be hearing from the real you, and I think that is also why so many love your blog. You are passionate about what you share, be it family, faith, photography, cool old junk we all love to collect, or cowboy boots :) Your blog is unique among the blogs I read, Anne, and I love it (and you)!
I have lots of chickens, and they look so cute when they ruffle their feathers, ;-) Bottom line - it's your blog and you can do what you want, other bloggers can do what they want. It's all good!
BTW I had tickets for Les Mis in San Antonio for last Friday night, it was wonderful! I was so fortunate to get season tickets to Broadway Across America this year, and look so forward to my once-a-month chance to dress up and go to the big city, hehe. Looking forward to Blue Man Group in February.
Keep up the great blogging!
Patty
I totally agree with you, Anne. I've received invites and emails like that, too - and I just explain to them that this is MY blog containing MY content regarding MY life. Why would I want someone else to write on my blog..? I don't get it. Anyway, thanks for staying real, keeping it honest, and teaching us all a little more about blogger-safety. I think it's important to stay on our toes and really understand as much as we can about blogland. :)
Hugs ~
xoxo laurie
Funny post :) I always love to read what you write. I can't believe the audacity of some people! Keep up the great work! Love it!
~Shanon
Excellent post and you keep on rolling your own way girl! Your blog is just that... YOUR blog! I think it is hilarious that people ask to be on your blog roll and all that. I don't have a problem with ads. If it helps someone who needs a bit of extra cash so be it. I love that you keep it real and worry more about your family and your outside interest than being a slave to your blog! You go girl! So glad to hear you had a great week!
Precisely! I get a lot of the same emails, and have never even considered those avenues. Here's to keeping it real, and maintaining absolute ownership.
I just don't want to compromise the integrity of my blog that way.
Yours is beautiful AS IS!
XOX
I've followed you for a long time and would continue, whether you had sponsors or not, because like you said...it's your choice, but I'm sort of glad you don't...some of the blogs I loved changed a lot after taking on sponsors and I'd hate to see you change like that.
Lezlee
Oh, I hear ya! I get some of those emails myself. I like doing my own thing...I have enough stuff to worry about :)
Well put.. The other day I was thinking about my blog and why I started it and it has led away from what is was suppose to be a daily journal or my scrapbooking. I welcome the change but dont ever want to feel like people dont want to hear about my family they just want to see my ideas or what I have bought. I so enjoy my blog and yours too! Happy New Year!!1
LOVE this...you said it so well! I will never forget, YEARS ago, when I first started, I had someone I sort of knew, email me and ask if I would talk about her and her shop on my blog. I was dumbfounded and really not to sure what to do as I was very green at the time and I decide that she was just green too and just didn't know the protocol of blogging back in 2005 or 2006 whenever that happened.
I remembered thinking at that moment (and telling her politely) that my blog is more about my life adventures and should any adventure of mine ever include her shop, and I feel the need to write about it, she would be the first to know.
And it was then that I made the decision not to put up links only because there were too many bloggers I did enjoy, and I just couldn't keep up with the fast pace of it all back then, and didn't want to chance accidentally leaving someone out.
Like you, blogging isn't my life and it was so easy back then to get so caught up with it all and staking "your claim" to your own territory and how you run it is so important...and doing it with no apologies.
You always do what you do with so much grace. I have learned a lot from you. Thanks for your wise insight.
Big hug
Elizabeth :-)
Even though at this time I no longer blog, I can't help myself to stop by an read what your up to. As always your honesty brings me back for more... Love this blog of yours.
~G~xo
"God on High, hear my prayer", I love that too...
Virtual high five to you!!! I get some of the same requests and at times I am baffled at how to respond to them. I don't want to hurt feelings but as you say, it is about blogging your way. I don't have ads on my blog either and I blog to share and encourage.
Just this week I have been offered gift certificates in exchange for product reviews, (I am not going to endorse a product or review a site I have not had personal experience with), I have been asked to switch places with a blogger I don't even know as guest poster to promote my site and her product, and been informed that a ebook writer will send me his wording for a link to one of my tutorials he intends to include in his ebook due out in Feb. (without asking my permission mind you), and it is only Tuesday!
Cheers to blogging your way!
Hi Anne,
This is why I adore your posts and blog! Really love hearing your honest thoughts on everything! I'm still fairly new to blogging, so I don't even have the slightest clue to the whole ad & sponsor thingy - but I'm sure it must get so annoying for you to get all sorts of messages asking you to do "this & that!" Good for you for sticking to your guns. Every blog is different, and you should be able to do what YOU want! :)
Anyway, hope you're having a blessed day!
Cheers,
Jessie
You go Anne. well put. Have a wonderful week
Hugs
Pattie
Hi Anne,
This really is a great post, and I hope that you won't be so inundated with emails of the like now! I have dabbled with ads on my blog, but have been thinking of discontinuing them, as I have been pondering what it means to be an authentic blogger. Frankly, I am very tired of seeing bloggers who want to be the next "Lettered Cottage" etc. It's just fine to have your blog be your business, but it seems to come across as insincere from these wannabe bloggers. I have advertised a bit on other blogs to promote my etsy shop, and it does help with sales. I don't know...it's kind of a toughy with the ads. I suppose it's to each their own on that. Thanks for your always wonderful and REAL posts :)
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!
XO and blessings! Well said!
Diane
Completely agree! Well said!
Kimberly
To thine ownself be true! Works for me every time and obviously it works for you too!
Great post!
Gail
I just stumbled upon your blog today, read this post and I'm adding you to my daily blog roll. :-) It's easy to sell out, but you've got your priorities in the right place and I respect that. Wonderfully written!
God Bless!
Candi
..i come here every day. to read what you have to say, the joys & and sadness. and of course the photography. it is YOU and your story, i come for. you have never disappointed. i have cried with you, and been utterly thrilled when you have a success. (many of them). YOU are the reason i come.
in fondest. Tilda
Amen sister! I don't feel that I could put advertisements up on my blog. It's offputting in my mind. My blog is my baby, my personality, my creative space, why would I put advertisements on it? You go girl!
I totally agree! I read blogs b/c I want to, not because of who's advertising, anyway. Further, I think a lot of people take their blogging too seriously and it's cutthroat...I also have a full time job and three kids as well...there's no way I could- or would want- for it to own ME. It's not supposed to be a job, but an outlet! andrea@townandprairie
ps. finally saw your mannequins in Romantic Country! love the top photo! had to run out and get my new issue!
saw your pic in RC mag this weekend! fun to see your name in print, again! :)
I hear you.
funny you wrote this, because I just recently received an inquiry asking if I had any guest posting opportunities. the strange thing is that the e-mailer didn't even add a link to their own blog.. hm.. what 'ya think of that? it was so cold & uninviting.. right to the point. huge turn off there! I usually give the canned, yet honest response that my blog is my journal of my food & styling. And that is what it is because I love doing it. I love the whole process & production. I will never be about needing others to promote my blog... I'm a firm believer in good old fashioned hardwork. And if anything comes of my work, it'll be because I worked my tail off. :)
You work so hard & give so much to so many - don't worry about all that ad stuff. xo
One more reason to adore you....you go girl!!!! x0
I'm happy we are bloggy friends xo
You're my favorite blog. Always looking forward to reading more.
Love, jody
Lord only knows me and my little blog are never gonna be anyone's spring board to success, but I have to be honest and admit I'm more than a little amused by some of the offers I get. Usually it's a dead giveaway that they haven't read my content, otherwise why would they think I know anything about anything they are trying to promote. Scrapping, DIYing...uh...have you met me? Let me also add...there is a right way...and a wrong way to self-promote. You didn't mention, but I have to ask how do you feel about folks who sneakily manage to do some self-promoting within your comment section? That's the one that gets me. Heck...they're not even offering you a crumb in return.
For those who do choose to advertise...I say if it rings your bell...go for it, but...but when I go to visit and I have to wait for all the ads to load, I sometimes leave the party early.
Girl...I know I'm wordy...but that's what you get for leaving the back door unlocked!
Deb
As a new blogger, I am learning more and more about the large world of blogging every day. Thank you for posting such an honest look into what goes on "behind the scenes" of running a blog. I think it's wonderful that you stay true to your passion and don't "sell out." Love your blog and yes, Les Mis is awesome!
Preach it sister! I love what you posted! That is exactly why I love your blog...
LOLOLOL You go girl and I feel the same way (although no chance of anyone asking me since I usually only get one or two comments when I blog anyway LOL). But good luck on not getting those sorts of emails - just delete, delete, delete. LOLOLOL
you go girl!! Say whatever you want it is your blog and how you roll! yeehaw!
Let me state from the start that I do not blog - I only read them and I spend hours doing so because I find blogs to be thoroughly entertaining, enjoyable, amazing and better than any magazine on the market. However, I am not a big fan of the ads on some blogs, I do find them quite distracting, but I also realize that many bloggers do it because it helps to supplement their income. Anyway, I always look forward to your posts and photos, and love your opinion on this subject.
Bravo! Very well said. I've had all the same thoughts myself and it's so refreshing to read that at least one other blogger feels the same way.

I am so glad you posted about this. I get some of the same e-mails and I just ignore them, but I do feel guilty sometimes. But not anymore! Thank you so much for clearing this up for me! Well put!
I hate when all those ads pop up on blogs, but I do understand that people do that to make money! But I still find is very distracting!
tot
Thumbs up! Welcome back, Anne.
GIRL ... I just climbed up on my little savvycityfarmer soapbox right next to you ...
I just posted on some creative ways to grow a blog,
ADS, and buttons not being one of the ways!!!
loathe them
have I told you lately that I love you?
You had me at
DEED, as indeed,
it's yours and yours
alone.....I roll the
same way!
Love ya,
xx Suzanne
To thine own self be true! Kudos to you for standing your ground and doing what you feel is right for you, Anne. :-) Sue
Hi Little Anne! Good for you for doing what YOU want to on your blog. I have to say I feel honored because I've been getting some of those emails too and I don't respond. I know so many folks advertise on their blogs, but I just don't want to do that! :) You always have the prettiest snaps no matter what! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Love you, my dear. So glad we're friends. Love the fact that you are "you". xoxo
Hello Anne! I just discovered you today from the Common Ground party and I have to say I like your attitude! I am new to the blog world and am learning quite a bit, but you put it all in perspective. Thumbs up! Enjoy the weekend :) Angie
I feel the same way - Good for you for speaking up!!! Sally
Oh dear Anne.....you certainly TELL IT LIKE IT IS!!!! You go girl.....you are the best.
xo

I figure it's your blog and you run it however the heck you want. And what is with the paying to get on someone's blogroll thing? That's just weird and defeats the purpose. I will look at the blogs on someone else's blog roll because I respect and admire the blogger and figure they will have some blogs on there that are similar in style and feel to their own blog.
Super interesting! I loved to hear your thoughts on this topic. It's nice to see how a successful blogger feels about these things. I'm a shop owner and use my blog to advertise for my shop(unsuccessfully). It's funny to hear that you are unimpressed by all the blogging hoopla. If someone asked to advertise on my blog or be a guest on my blog, I would first laugh out loud and then panic. Thanks for your REAL thoughts. It is sometimes hard to find "real" people in this blogging world. You have proved to be one of them!

PS- Moved to Interventional Radiology, and what a big stress-reliver! I think of you every time I see a resp. tx, which is usually with an ICU pt. who needs a procedure. Hope things are treating you well. You should come to Maine. xo
Can I get an AMEN. I never intended to make money from my blog. It is just a place to share with like minded souls and that is who you will find on my blog roll. I get many emails asking me why I don't want to make money or support a new product that could bring me readers. Not what I'm hear to do. Blogging can be a great way to support your business and bring customers, don't get me wrong. Just not why I got started.
I am new to your blog and all I have to say is good for you. Good reminder to stop and think about why I do this. I do it for me. I do it because I like it and is provides me with a bit of happiness. At the end of the day, it's not about how many followers I have, how many comments I receive, though I am grateful for anyone who takes the time to visit. It's about sharing what I love and connecting with others who share that love. thanks for making me think about this.
MC
No ruffled feathers from this bird! My blogging pet peeve is when bloggers with no advertisers apologize for not writing...when the truth is, they were just living. WHy apologize for living life and doing first things first?
My attitude toward blogging is "live first, blog second" and "make the blog work for you; don't work for the blog."
Blessings to you in 2012!
Linsey
PS - Love Les Mis. Have you read it? I tried to read it in French once!
HILARIOUS!
You should SEE the emails I get. But I wouldn't want to hurt anyones feelings but dang, some of them are so funny and assumptive. Some are really sweet and some are just ridiculous!
You go girl! You are so real I LOVE IT!
Love, Ang
Always love to read and hear your insight Anne! While we do accept sponsors on our blog, they will always be inline with the type of content we offer. I liken it to a magazine with limited, quality and relevant advertisement. That said blogging for V and I has become a part time job, one we feel passionate and happy working at everyday. We hope though, that it will never control who we are or what we have to offer! Thank you for always being so real and transparent Anne! You are a gem!
