What Really Matters...

It had been done a hundred times before.
This time it turned out different.

My husband took some trash out to burn in our fire pit.
Just some cardboard and some magazines.

I even had him check this morning
to make sure the burn ban was not in effect.

And a short time later I heard him yell from outside for help...

The flames had jumped the pit and were out of control.

The medical person in me reacted in a triage fashion:

Call 911...

Make sure the animals are okay....

Move the cars so the fire trucks could get inside the gate...

Rush back outside to help him put out the flames.

We are still in our "old" house way out in the country.
It took the volunteer fire trucks almost 20 minutes to arrive.
Twenty long minutes, and I thought for sure our home
would be engulfed before they got there.

But arrive they did.
All four of them.

Our siding on the back side of our home was burned,
and the flames came right up to the house.
We both inhaled a fair amount of smoke,
and I have some burns on my feet.

However....

 we are safe.

 Winnie is safe inside.

Havok and Belle are safe around to the side of the house.

And we still have a home.
And our lives.

I am shaken beyond belief, but so grateful,
as I know that we came very. very close to losing everything today.
Everything materially, that is.

I'll be away for a bit as I process what happened today.

Giving thanks to God above....

So glad to hear you are all safe and sound! I know how easy it is for a fire to get out of control and we do a lot of burning ourselves. Living on property there is always lots of trees that need triming etc. but we mainly collect it all in summer then burn in winter, as no one is allowed to burn in summer where I live in Australia. take care,Maryann

I jumped into action to help and was so relieved when the fire department arrived! Thankfully, all livestock and barns are safe and the firemen stopped it just as it arrived at the hay bales. Yes, prayers and blessing abound this week!

this all looks so familiar, with the exception we out buildings. an old barn mainly for storage and garage and other small buildings and two silos. we also cleaning up old grass and everything was ready to go,wind, etc. we called 911 immediately and all we could do is stand there with our eyes and our mouths hanging open. nothing we could do. we lost various things, but got the dogs out and the cats were in the house. the neighbors across the field said they never had had entertainment while having supper..:( it was hard for nights when i would shut my eyes, all i could see were flames. most happy that you both did not have too many injuries. you were blessed as we were and those things can happen so instantly. Oh my gosh, you poor thing. I know exactly how you feel. Some years ago my father in law was burning trash and it got away from him. Way out in the boonies and it slowly krept up the valley towards our home.It was the worst day, terrifying in the extreme, seeing it come closer and knowing you couldn't do anything about it. Our story turned out pretty much the way yours did. The volunteer fire dept came and buldozed the hillsides and men with shovels and rakes came to our recue. A great bunch of people. It really puts things into perspective and makes you appreciate what you do have instead of worrying over what you don't. Prayers go outo you guys. Take it easy and take care.

We had a bedroom fire 6/6/10...our son left a floor fan on straight for 3 days, the motor burned out and down it's cord it went to the outlet. it was the only room in our 14 room house that was completely renovated. so somewhat materially we were upset (also because it could have been prevented) There were some items in the room that were irreplaceable, so that was also upsetting. BUT...it stayed contained to the one room, no one was hurt, all the cats (3) were out. That is where we were blessed and lucky! the rest of the upstairs had smoke and soot damage, but overall the loss was minimal.

we also live out in the boonies, and in the 25 years we have lived here, forest fires have come within a mile of our home, and the police had our "little village" on voluntary evac. It never became mandatory, but we all had a bag and some irreplaceables, ready to go, just in case.

We burn leaves occasionally (5 acres heavily wooded in the pack and heavily treed in the front) but we burn them in an old metal drum that Ron drilled holes in.

I am soooo very glad you, hubby and the furbabies are ok, and that your house is in tact. You surely had a guardian angel with you that day!
much love and gently hugs,
Susan

Oh dear.

Take your time and process...it will take a bit.

In 2002, my entire town was evacuated because of a raging forest fire. As I was loading my Kitty in the car, I saw a wall of flames coming over the hill behind the house. As I drove away, I assumed I would never see my house and stuff again. That night, staying with a friend about ten miles away, the sky glowed orange and I thought all was gone....

Three days later, they let everyone return home. Everything was safe! The fire had gotten SO close, but those Hot Shot Fire Crews from all over the country, and local firemen from all over the state had done an amazing job!

I certainly thanked God for them, that everything was safe, and no people had lost their lives.

So anyway, to make a long comment short---so glad you all are safe and please spend some time working through everything. It really does something to you....shocks the system to put it mildly.

Good Lord, I
can't believe
this. Thankfully
everyone is OK,
but like you, I'd
still be shaking
in my boots. Sending
you virtual hugs
and smoke removal.
Take it easy and
remember to breathe.
I'll be thinking
of you!!
xx Suzanne

Day-um!

So happy it wasn't catasrophic. WHEW.

Thanks for calling me a 'rock star', that was cute! And doesn't Tracey wrap her French Larkspur stuff up so nicely!? I'm ashamed I haven't blogged about it myself.

So nice to catch up on your blog, dear.

Anne, Oh my goodness! Thanking God for his graces that he was there with you in your ordeal and that He continues to surround you, Mr. Twig, Belle, Havoc and Winnie with a Hedge of Protection. Please by easy on yourselves with TLC and time to get through this. Your loved ones, your home and thank goodness your beloved camera equipment were spared. Blessings and hugs, Sunny
