Why, doesn't it seem like only yesterday
that I was proclaiming a complete fast from spending?
that I was proclaiming a complete fast from spending?
Oh okay, day before yesterday, but so what?
Nitpickers.
Nitpickers.
Anyway...
I'm not really spending here,
just thinking out loud.
just thinking out loud.
About wants and needs, and what truly differentiates them,
and ultimately, what justifies them.
and ultimately, what justifies them.
As an artist, what would help you
to create your art in a more efficient fashion?
to create your art in a more efficient fashion?
What would push your art to the next level?
If you're a seamstress or textile artist, is it a new sewing machine?
Do you paint? Would better brushes do the trick?
How about German glass glitter
instead of the el-cheapo Wal-Mart variety?
instead of the el-cheapo Wal-Mart variety?
And for me?
I'd like another camera lens.
Either a Nikon 50mm 1.4 AF or a Nikon 55-300mm, to be exact.
Neither are cheap.
But do I really need a second lens?
Objectively, no.
Not like I need food, water and oxygen.
But would it be justified ?
Yes.
Maybe not in a grand, obvious way right this very moment,
but most definitely for the future.
but most definitely for the future.
Things are happening behind the scenes here....
big, exciting things that I can't share just yet....
big, exciting things that I can't share just yet....
but things that will most definitely make investing in a second lens
and ultimately a second, better camera a logical progression for my art.
But for now, I'm content.
Sort of.
{grin}
{grin}
Can y'all relate?
What would help you in your creative endeavors?
Happy Sunday!

Hello Sweet Anne,
Your pictures are beautiful.
My sister alerted me to check out your latest post! She loved your pictures too..... I love your photography!
Hugs,
Maria
I wanted to tell you I can't find an email from you....Would you so kindly forward it to my email address, losttrailranch@hughes.net
Oh secrets...love it, but I WANNA know! I've asked Santa for a new camera this year. It's time I suppose to trade in my point and shoot for a real one. Especially since I've always got one with me.
Justified, yes ma'am! How about for Christmas, that's it... ask Mr. Handsome to get you a new lens for Christmas:)
Have a blessed day! HUGS!
Hello Anne... I am excited to hear your news, when you are able to share it... your photography is so beautiful, I don't think you need to improve anything about it... I love reading that you "are content"... I just did a new post about how I am happy with what I have, feeling a bit nostalgic today... looking at your beautiful little farmhouse and treasures you have unearthed reminded me so of my great~grandpa and his ranch... so, I guess I would say an inspiring blog, like yours, helps my creative side... xoxo Julie Marie PS I am so happy my sweet friend Tracie from My Petite Maison introduced me to your blog... I am putting you button on my sidebar... xoxo
More time is all I need!
Sounds like the new lens is a must-buy, so go for it!
x
I sure hope you get one....your photos are soooo divine, I am positive a new lens would be even better!!! Love to see all of your gorgeous pictures!
I need a big jar of energy to get me back to making things, I just can't seem to get off the computer!!!
Hugs,
Margaret B
I am putting "your" button on my sidebar, not "you button"... tee hee hee... I type really fast, and I really should proofread my comments! xoxo Julie Marie
Anne,
I think you are totally justified in wanting a new lens and even a new camera if potography is your passion, maybe we can be good with what we have but we could be brillant with something better. Thats my opinion. Ha !
What I could use right now is clients for portraits and customers for my Etsy shop. so I can make more money to buy more stuff , like antiques and junk .
Your photos are lovely !
Sharon
Anne ~ you are such a tease! But I love to see the excitement in your words!!
As I am in the midst of my booth makeover at the shop it has made me feel... well, more professional I guess. Also setting the stage for my changing taste. It was what I needed at the moment.
Guess it looks like you'll be on your best behavior between now and the holidays!
space!
:)
Hi Anne, I say go for it and get what you want. Now I love buying beautiful fabric and trims... but ask me if I need any more right now, well no I don't but if I see me some gorgeous fabric I'm pulling out the check book... I just can't resist it!!! Hope you have a wonderful Sunday!!!
Blessings~~~ Daphne
Although your photographs are already superb, I know how you feel as both my son and daughter are into photography in a big way. It is only by them demonstrating just what a difference a certain lense can make that I now understand their need to always be improving their tools. I hope you get your wish and would say it is definitely a need not an extravagance. Can't wait to here the grand news!
Might be a good end-of-the-year business write-off...just sayin'...LOL
sadly, i can justify ANYTHING! in case you can't *justify* then i say add it to your Christmas list...i bet you've been a good girl and every good girl deserves a little somethingsomething!
Anne, your photos are beautiful. I think a new lens would be fabulous, and you deserve it...maybe for Christmas? I have 2, but neither are that great of lenses. I really need a photography class. That would help me develop my love of taking pics.
If it is for your photography you don't really need to justify getting a new lens, if it improves your work then you have to get it. Your photos are wonderful already but new 'tools' always make the artist feel better :-) And as Christmas is almost here you have the perfect excuse.
I always work on the difference between 'need' and 'want' of course sometimes I can justify anything if I really want it.
Sounds to me like you have exciting news ahead that will help justify this purchase! Perhaps it will pay for itself within a certain time period? Your photography is already amazing, but as an artist taking it too the next level is what sets you apart. I understand why you would want the lens(es). I personally would love a bit more creative time and space. Time will always be a battle. Hubby agreed I could convert our formal living room to a studio (using very small office now)and even get a nice PB table since it is a room everyone can see. Now, that he's in agreement, I can't bear to spend the money! Isn't that funny? It is nice to have his blessing and something to look forward to though. I'll make it happen in 2011.
Can't wait to hear your news. That sounds like it might be pretty awesome. You do take beautiful pictures, so I know you would love a new lens. Have a wonderful week. Love & blessings from NC!
there is always something to want so i understand. i have a cannon 50mm 1.4 and it doesn't come off my camera often, i love it! enjoy the day! susan
A new camera lens is on my Christmas wish list but I don't think Santa's coming through for me this year...those darn priorities:)
Love your pics!
Abby
If a new lens is what will get you to the top of your creative endeavors, then I think you need it, right now!
I would like a new sewing machine, one of those that does embroidery and has a ruffler! Also, a new camera and some power tools!!!
hugs
Sissie
I so love seeing someone pursueing a passion. Seems so many people go thru life with no passion. I say get your lens -- it will be a great tax write-off. Love your pictures. Jan
I have a nice camera, but need to invest in photography lessons. The difference between a good photo and a great photo could make or break a sale--so I think it's justified for you to get that new lens. But I think your photos are just beautiful now.
I'm excited about whatever you've got cookin', and can't wait to hear all about it.
I need Silver Bella and I'm going this week - I can't wait!!! p.s. I think you've been real good this year, so email Santa, Anne :)
I love some secrets and intrigue! Yes you NEED a new lens and even a 2nd camera, I'm sure of it!! Oh now I can't wait to hear the news! Your photos are already amazing and you just keep getting better!
I'm VERY good at justifying buying more clothes. A girl's gotta walk out the door lookin' good, doesn't she??? And how can that hot chic come home to a natty looking house? Therefore....I can justify buying "pretties" for my home. Justify? I can justify just about anything...!! lol! Can't wait to hear what you've got cooking, Anne! It sounds very exciting.....and justified! lol! :)
xoxo laurie
I hear you!!! I really want a desk - that is not only pretty but functional .. I hope mine just manifests itself
A Natural Progression, I would say! There you go, sanctified!
Oh boy! I would love to have a better camera, only thing is I don't have the brains to operate it! But I wish I did! The photos you guys take makes me weak in the knees! Maybe I should take a class or something!
Theresa
aka:TOT
some extra cash would do it for me!
gail
Anne, your photography is so lovely. Sounds like something exciting is in the works. Good for you! Sounds like a new lense is an investment in your future. What could be better!... As for me, I could really use more workspace and more time of course!
You're not doing it for you...it's for the sake of your art, so go ahead! ;-)
I could use another lens, a better tripod, and some studio lighting...hmm I'm not wishing for much am I?!
Can't wait to hear your big news!
Kat :)
My nephew sometimes rents equipment he wants for a special event...But you could try sitting on Santa's lap! lol, Lezlee
Stay content for now....those pics are great! Hugs, Janna
Hey Sweet Anne;)
I gotta pipe in here:)) I have the 50mm 1.4 lens (Canon) and it is a dream. Perfect for portraits and some low light situations like shooting in doors. The thing you have to remember with this type of "fixed" lens is that you can't zoom but you must move your feet to get closer to your subjects. Wonderful prime lens though! As for the 55mm-300mm if you like to do a lot of outside telephoto shooting, this one would be ideal. For me, my choice would be the 50mm in a heartbeat:))
Hugs, Carol
I totally understand, Nikon rules...am having the same lens lust, just haven't narrowed it down as far as you have. Something to think about, if this is a BUISNESS expence? it's a tax deduction...
for real.
now, can you tell me how to get past the boot lust that's currently flooding my thoughts???
I finally made the decision to go from my point and shoot lumix up to a DSLR and preordered the Nikon D7000 back in Sept. Took over a year to decide on a model and now that I have I can't wait and it still hasn't been released! I ordered the 28-300 nikon lens to go with it. The lens is here making it harder to wait for the camera! Mine is justified by a birthday and Christmas!
I keep telling you, it's not about the "need", it is ALL about the "want"! Good for you!!
Take care, Sue
German glass glitter sounds good now that you mention it! I like the sound of big exciting things happening behind the scenes for you! You know you're gonna NEED that new lens, it's sounds like it will be a wise investment in your future! I can't wait for you to reveal the big news! xoxo ~Lili
Hi little Anne! OH, yes ma'am, I can relate! I want a camera! A fancy dancy camera! I guess I do pretty well with my point and shoot but I still want a fancy dancy one! You take marvelous pictures and I'm excited knowing wonderful things are happening for you! Can't wait to hear.
be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Oooh! I'm excited to hear about your progression in photography!! When are you going to spill on it? I can hear ya on the camera lens upgrading thing, only for me.. well, I'd like to upgrade to a new camera - I crave crisp.. crisp.. crystalness. :) There is no way in h-e double hockey sticks I can afford a fancy camera.. but I am looking at the Cannon G11 right now. ;) and chanting you will be mine, yes you will. Ha. Ha. It's so funny you wrote this topic because I have been dwelling on what kind of things would help me improove my hobby and I am noticing that people who have white painted walls get great daylight light bounce - so yes, white painted walls througout the home is on the list. I just observe and take in a lot of these things. I love how you write what I am thinking. Great post Anne!!
Hugs, Lara
I don't really think you can look at it as a need or a want. Truly, there is not that much that a person really needs. But, if photography is your passion and you are trying to pursue it as a business, then you should get the lens and go after your dreams wholeheartedly. Perhaps it will be one of those things where once you have it, you'll wonder why you didn't get it a long time ago :)
Ever since you got your Nikon, I wanted one too...I’m still dreaming about that one, but I too just love taking pictures now that I’m all digital. No more worries about wasted film and crappy pictures. Just Delete Baby! Hey hopefully that new lens will be a tax writeoff in the future when photography turns into a professional career...Yes?
Hi Anne:
Can't wait to you spill the good news. So, in answer to your question...Elbow Room. That's what I need. Good, old fashioned Elbow Room. sigh Hope you have a great week, my friend.
xoxo
Donna
~*~Crossing my fingers for a new camera for Christmas!! LOVE your images btw!! Hugs~ Rachel~*~*~*
Anne, I can relate! But I'll bet that 100% of us would say your photographs are already great art!
For me...I'd like a bigger studio where I could have my now 3 rooms where I do my work all meshed into ONE. Or maybe time to get back to oil painting, which there is absolutely no room OR time for lately. Well...it's always there if and when life permits! It's good to have a plan!
:-) Hugs, Diane
Looking forward to hearing your exciting news! It sounds to me that it has to do with photography so investing in a new lens and/or camera would be money well spent.
My son has a passion and talent for photography and we have invested some pretty hefty money in different lenses (he's a Canon guy). It has been money well spent. He loves sports photography and this year as a freshman in college (at Ole Miss) he has been on the field at football games and now on the basketball court taking photos. He has talent but the good equipment took him to a whole new level.
Good luck with what lies ahead....it sounds like a wonderful new adventure.

Oh, Anne, dear, this post struck me this morning ... having just been on a completely unnecessary junk hunt to my favorite store just yesterday. Did I NEED the rug and other treasures I dragged home? No. Did they feed my soul and feather my nest and make me completely happy? Yes. THAT'S my definition of 'need'. I have the Nikon 55-300 lens, and I don't use it as much as my husband thought I would when he bought it for me. Get the other one. :)
mmmmm ... the paypal account over here is growing, that's a good start!
you always inspire
Hello cute girl- I am so very excited for you and your photography adventure- it is so great when we can do what we love. Your photographs are always so creative and beautiful.
Right now I just need to get organized and use what I have but I always LOVE new paint brushes. I buy the cheepies because I am terrible about letting them dry with paint on them :-)
PS- it's up to us girls to keep the economy going.... that's what I keep telling my hubby!!!!!
LOVE those perfect shots! Now I'm anxious to hear all that's going on behind the scenes!
love ya,
Debra
Canon user here. I took the advice of a 3 professionals 2 of which are Nikon users that said for fast moving Canon's "L" lenses are legendary. I'm very happy with my 70-200 lens and 2x teleconverter. Both been worth every darn cent.
Holding back on spending is exactly what I am doing...no more estate sales. Your images are top flight but you are acutely aware of your needs and now you have all of us wondering.....
Now that my shop is closed & it WAS my studio, I am constantly dreaming of the perfect home studio. I imagine my sweet hubby starting on a room additon with plenty of windows, included building in some of my favorite stain glass ones & once done...this would be my space. Only my space, where I can retreat from the world, decorate any way I'd like & leave out all my supplies & when I return to a project... nothing will have been touched. Sounds like heaven to me!!!
Go get that lens girl, you work tooo hard to deny yourself something that we all know is your TRUE PASSION!!!
Big Hugs & a Dream,
Susie
Having ANY camera
at the moment would
help me, immensely!
{Remember, el dorko
that I am, I lost my
nice one in August.}
Actually, I'm about
a millimeter away from
buying one.....Not
a NEED, which is why
it's taking me soooo
long....I guess I don't
have the exciting
justification that I
think you do : ) !!
That is great and most
certainly is a need.
xx Suzanne
Trust me I totally get wanting things. Right now I'm just wishing for a decent camera. I'm trying to save up some money. Using leftover food money I'm keeping in a coffee can in the kitchen...$10 here and there. It's sort of embarrasing being a blogger and not having amazing pictures like yours :) I'm waiting for you to share what your new endeavor is. Can't wait to hear all about it.
Take care,
Valerie
I think you deserve a new lens... and...
if it will help with your work, a new venture, maybe...
you certainly should get one! :)
I love your photos already and I know the ones with the new lens will be even more spectacular!
I, on the otherhand, am hoping to get a new camera in the near future. I have an old Rebel, but it's not digital, and I'm currently using a small cheap digital camera. I'm keeping my fingers crossed to find a good used digital that I can use my old Canon lenses with.
Anne--I would vote for the 50mm 1.4 or have you thought of a 35mm 1.4? These lenses would be great for family events, portraits and of course, your blog! A zoom is nice but for the detail and depth of field I would go for the shorter lenses that let in more light! They will also set you back less than the zoom. I can't wait to hear your news... sounds like something wonderful!
